Acerola, or Acerola Cherry (Malpighia glabra) is a shrub also known as Barbados cherry, West Indian cherry and wild crape myrtle. A fruit bearing tree native to Mexico, Central and South America, it often grows in warm, tropical areas. Traditionally, acerola cherry has been part of the food culture of native Amazonian for centuries. Cherry-like fruits can be eaten fresh picked from the trees just as you would do in the case of other bush berries. However, their extremely tart flavor and proportionately large sized seeds would limit their use as a favorite table fruit. These bright-red fruits are known for being one of the highest natural sources of vitamin C on the planet.
- Food sources of vitamin C are the most bioavailable and compatible to the living matrix of the human body and far superior to isolated vitamin C. Vitamin C never occurs as an isolate in Nature. It occurs as part of an entire complex, which includes other important cofactors that assist the body with proper absorption.
- Acerola cherries are also high in B vitamins, carotenoids, bioflavonoids, and alkalizing minerals – specifically, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, and calcium.
