Benfotiamine, a fat-soluble form of vitamin B1 (thiamine), supports healthy blood sugar metabolism and helps protect the body’s tissues against advanced glycation end products and oxidative stress66 For example, the enzyme transketolase is critical to blood sugar metabolism. Like many enzymes, transketolase requires a co-factor. In this case, it needs assistance from thiamine. Unfortunately, thiamine is water-soluble, which makes it less available to the interior of the cell. Benfotiamine is fat-soluble and can easily penetrate into the inside of cells. It is also more bioavailable than the water-soluble thiamine.
In a landmark study, benfotiamine effectively increased transketolase activity in cell cultures by an astounding 300%, compared to a mere 20% for thiamine. This robust activation was sufficient to block three of the four major metabolic pathways leading to blood vessel damage.66 Benfotiamine also blocks the activation of the transcription factor known as nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB), which is implicated in numerous inflammatory conditions.66
Overall, benfotiamine can activate glucose metabolism and promote healthy blood glucose levels in those already within normal range. Benfotiamine also helps maintain healthy endothelial function.67-73 Benfotiamine with Thiamine is a low-cost dietary supplement that can help maintain blood sugar levels in those already within normal range and support the health of the nerves, kidneys, eyes, blood vessels, and heart.

Benfotiamine is a form of vitamin B1 (thiamine) that offers five times better bioavailability than regular thiamine. The unique structure of benfotiamine allows it to pass more easily through cell membranes, improving its antioxidant capabilities. Recent studies have shown that benfotiamine is effective for preventing a wide variety of oxidative-stress induced conditions, including diabetic nephropathy, neuropathy and retinopathy. The link between befotiamine and eye damage in diabetics has led researchers to examine its potential role in the prevention of another eye condition, uveitis.
Uveitis is an inflammatory eye condition affecting around 4 in 1000 individuals at some time in their life. The condition is usually caused by autoimmune diseases or by a bacterial infection. Although the inflammation associated with uveitis usually resolves in a few weeks, it can become a recurrent problem, eventually leading to more serious conditions, like cataracts and glaucoma. Furthermore, the primary treatment for uveitis is corticosteroids, which are associated with a number of negative side-effects. Because of this, scientists are on the look-out for alternative approaches to help prevent uveitis.
Researchers at the University of Texas targeted benfotiamine as one of these potential alternatives. They examined the ability of this vitamin to prevent ocular inflammation and endotoxin induced uveitis in rats. This rat model is very similar to the human variety of this condition, and provides a good basis for comparison. The scientists found that treatment with benfotiamine was able to prevent endotoxin induced uveitis in the rats, and significantly reduced the expression of a variety of pro-inflammatory molecules including cytokines, chemokines and COX-2. It also effectively inhibited both PKC and NF-kB, both of which are intimately involved in the progression of inflammation and uveitis.
Although these results are currently limited to rats, they are very promising for humans, especially those suffering from recurrent bouts of uveitis. The results are also very much in line with studies showing that benfotiamine is effective in preventing and slowing diabetic retinopathy. Vision is very important, and benfotiamine may be one way to help preserve and protect this key sense.

Life Extension Foundation has one mission, and one mission only: to help you live a healthier, longer life.
In fact, we're at the forefront of medical research, constantly looking for ways to prolong youth, health, and life. And we've been at it for more than 34 years, investing more than $140 million to find therapies and technologies that could lead to lifesaving cures for the diseases of aging.
Did you know that we were the first to recommend low-dose aspirin therapy to protect against heart attack … CoQ10 for heart health … and the Omega-3s in fish oil to promote heart health?
Over 350 premium-quality formulations that are the gold standard of the industry. All are clinically validated and tested.
What is the Life Extension Foundation?
The Life Extension Foundation is one of the largest organizations dedicated to investigating every method of extending the healthy human life span. When seeking anti-aging therapies, health and nutrition, The Foundation has reported discoveries in the areas of atherosclerosis and stroke prevention, diabetes, prostate health, hormone replacement therapy, and other health concerns. The Life Extension Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization whose goal is to conquer the aging process within the next decade.
How old is the Life Extension Foundation?
The Life Extension Foundation was officially incorporated in 1980, but its founder has been involved in anti-aging research since the 1960s.
What scientific breakthroughs has the Life Extension Foundation made?
Research supported by The Life Extension Foundation has documented the value of antioxidants in extending life span and in protecting cells against ischemia (lack of blood flow). Ischemia is the leading cause of disability and death. Ischemia can be caused by the blockage of a coronary artery, which can lead to a heart attack, or a cerebral artery, which can lead to a stroke. Accident victims often die from ischemia. The Foundation supports a full time research facility that has broken all world records in protecting against ischemia-induced free radical damage. What is the Foundation's track record in recommending Life Extension Therapies?
The Life Extension Foundation was the first organization to defy the FDA by promoting the use of antioxidant vitamins to maintain health. The Foundation was the first organization to promote the use of low dose aspirin to maintain cardiovascular health. The Foundation was the first organization to recommend against the use of iron in dietary supplements because of evidence that iron causes massive free radical damage contributing to the development of cancer, atherosclerosis and a host of other diseases. The Foundation was the first organization to inform Americans about the "miracle nutrient" coenzyme Q10, about the anti-cancer carotenoids lycopene, lutein, and xanthophyl, and about the most effective anti-aging therapy in the world, Melatonin. And the Foundation was the first organization to introduce Americans to European "smart drugs" like piracetam, centrophenoxine, and DHEA.
