Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid antioxidant found in a variety of foods including salmon, krill and shrimp. Almost every cell in the body, including the eyes, brain, heart, and kidney, can benefit from astaxanthin. Astaxanthin restores retinal parameters to normal in eyes with experimentally-induced glaucoma.**

  • One of the most powerful natural antioxidants known
  • Experts labeled astaxanthin a "natural brain food"
  • In certain studies astaxanthin improved cognitive health scores and learning scores
  • May be effective for age-related decline in cognitive and psychomotor functions
  • Potent skin protection from the inside out
  • Supports balanced immune system functionality
  • Reduces cataract formation in some studies
  • Prevented massive body weight gain in animals fed high-fat or high-fructose diets
  • Helps fight cardiovascular diseases at multiple levels
  • Dietary intake of astaxanthin along with other carotenoids is associated with the reduced risk of cancer
  • Dietary Supplement

Astaxanthin, the fat-soluble compound that gives salmon its pink color, is a potent antioxidant that is loaded with numerous health benefits. In fact, it’s been shown to help optimize joint, immune,82-85 brain,86-90 cardiovascular,91-98 DNA,99-102 and mitochondrial103,104 health. It also supports healthy blood sugar levels for those already in the normal range.105-107 And astaxanthin crosses the blood-eye barrier, supporting vascular health within the eye84 and protecting the eyes’ sensitive cells.108 Because of all that, it’s becoming highly valued as a nutritional supplement.**

Unfortunately all the beautiful benefits of Astaxanthin are limited by its low absorption … normally as low as 50%.109,110 Astaxanthin with Phospholipids combines 4 mg of natural astaxanthin with 80 mg of a proprietary blend of four phospholipids to facilitate maximum absorption of astaxanthin into the bloodstream, where it’s transported to cells throughout the body.**

Just one softgel a day of this remarkable new formulation provides tremendous systemic cellular support.**

Age- and diabetes-related eye diseases contribute to visual impairments and blindness in millions of Americans. Astaxanthin has been found to prevent or slow three of the most common eye diseases: age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma.

The human retina naturally contains the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, molecules closely related to astaxanthin. Supplementation with all three carotenoids (astaxanthin 4 mg/day, lutein 10 mg/day, zeaxanthin 1 mg/day) has been shown to improve visual acuity and contrast detection in people with early age-related macular degeneration.69 In laboratory studies, astaxanthin supplementation protects retinal cells against oxidative stress and significantly reduces the area of destructive new blood vessel growth on retinas, a hallmark of advanced macular degeneration.70,71

Studies of patients with age-related macular degeneration reveal significant improvements in retinal electrical outputs following supplementation with astaxanthin and other carotenoids.72

Glaucoma, an increase in the pressure of fluid inside the eyeball, eventually results in retinal cell death from oxidant damage and loss of blood flow. Astaxanthin restores retinal parameters to normal in eyes with experimentally-induced glaucoma.73

Life Extension Foundation has one mission, and one mission only: to help you live a healthier, longer life.

In fact, we're at the forefront of medical research, constantly looking for ways to prolong youth, health, and life. And we've been at it for more than 34 years, investing more than $140 million to find therapies and technologies that could lead to lifesaving cures for the diseases of aging.

Did you know that we were the first to recommend low-dose aspirin therapy to protect against heart attack … CoQ10 for heart health … and the Omega-3s in fish oil to promote heart health?

Science-Based Supplements

Over 350 premium-quality formulations that are the gold standard of the industry. All are clinically validated and tested.

What is the Life Extension Foundation?

The Life Extension Foundation is one of the largest organizations dedicated to investigating every method of extending the healthy human life span. When seeking anti-aging therapies, health and nutrition, The Foundation has reported discoveries in the areas of atherosclerosis and stroke prevention, diabetes, prostate health, hormone replacement therapy, and other health concerns. The Life Extension Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization whose goal is to conquer the aging process within the next decade.

How old is the Life Extension Foundation?

The Life Extension Foundation was officially incorporated in 1980, but its founder has been involved in anti-aging research since the 1960s.

What scientific breakthroughs has the Life Extension Foundation made?

Research supported by The Life Extension Foundation has documented the value of antioxidants in extending life span and in protecting cells against ischemia (lack of blood flow). Ischemia is the leading cause of disability and death. Ischemia can be caused by the blockage of a coronary artery, which can lead to a heart attack, or a cerebral artery, which can lead to a stroke. Accident victims often die from ischemia. The Foundation supports a full time research facility that has broken all world records in protecting against ischemia-induced free radical damage. What is the Foundation's track record in recommending Life Extension Therapies?

The Life Extension Foundation was the first organization to defy the FDA by promoting the use of antioxidant vitamins to maintain health. The Foundation was the first organization to promote the use of low dose aspirin to maintain cardiovascular health. The Foundation was the first organization to recommend against the use of iron in dietary supplements because of evidence that iron causes massive free radical damage contributing to the development of cancer, atherosclerosis and a host of other diseases. The Foundation was the first organization to inform Americans about the "miracle nutrient" coenzyme Q10, about the anti-cancer carotenoids lycopene, lutein, and xanthophyl, and about the most effective anti-aging therapy in the world, Melatonin. And the Foundation was the first organization to introduce Americans to European "smart drugs" like piracetam, centrophenoxine, and DHEA.
